I am so, so excited for the holidays this year. I don’t know if it has something to do with my longing for togetherness with family and friends, or the fresh start that 2021 will bring, but I am already dreaming about decorating for the holidays! I got a chance to realize that dream with this room that I put together at my friend, Kim’s, home. Like our family, Kim celebrates both Christmas and Hannukah and it felt so good to bring some whimsy and holiday spirit to her home, using pieces from Target’s new collections.
I wanted to bring a warm, inviting and festive feeling into Kim’s home. The concept was to put a bit of a boho spin on a hygge atmosphere–lots of candles and fuzzy textures, cozy pillows and throw blankets to wrap yourself in while sipping on eggnog or playing a game of dreidel. I also wanted the space to feel lush and bring in some winter wonderland vibes, so I sprinkled lots of little sparkling trees, wreaths, and artwork that features greenery into the mix, as well as pieces made from natural materials. We also draped faux magnolia leaf garlands over the curtain rods to give the windows a bit of holiday flair. I’m so smitten with that wooden pom-pom garland draped over the mantelpiece too–that’s one of those things that I’d put up for the holidays (it would also make for a VERY cute piece to wrap around the tree), but keep up year ’round.
We used a modern console to set the stage for the Hanukkah area — a place to light the Menorah, sing songs, share prayers and open gifts. Lots of gold accents in this space with hints of blue and white. We also installed some festive (peel and stick!!) wallpaper to make it feel extra special for the holidays. The pompom dreidel garland is giving me all the feels and is only $15!
I’m such a fan a velvety textures for the holidays as well, and I love to play with the traditional “red and green” Christmas color palette–so here, we paired this rich mossy-green velvet sofa with soft pillows in different shades of pink and bordeaux, giving a nod to the traditional Christmas colors, with a bit of a layered, boho twist. It’s a good little trick I like to use: pulling together throw pillows that are different colors and styles, but all part of the same color family. I can make the assortment feel both collected and cohesive this way.
And on the other side of the room, I styled up these modern Danish-inspired chairs with these great yellow pillows. Yellow is a bit of a wild card–not totally expected for holidays, but because of all of the gold in this room, it really works, and also adds warmth to the space (also, such a pretty shade – I couldn’t resist!).
I had so much fun decorating this tree! Believe it or not, this was my first time ever decorating a Christmas tree and it really felt magical. The lights, the sparkles, the ornaments… yes, we need to talk about these ornaments for a minute. The attention to detail and the personalities are TOO MUCH. I mean, who doesn’t want a little felted sheep wearing a sweater and backpack?! Or a little turtle dove with sequins on her wings (she’s only $3 so you can hook her up with a whole flock of her homies!)? I just fell in love with these little creatures! And even though I wasn’t raised with the Christmas tree tradition, I’ve always loved the effect of bringing the outdoors in–especially during the winter months when we don’t get outdoors as much — so I decorated the tree with stars and doves and fun accents and it truly feels magical for all the winter holidays.
Speaking of bringing the outdoors in, while I’m not always a huge fan of faux botanicals, I gotta give it up to Target for A.) making really, really good ones, and B.) making things in faux that I would love to have out for the holidays, (like the branches of red berries pictured above) but wouldn’t be able to find at the flower mart or nursery, or would be too messy to actually have indoors (he-hem Cous Cous Kitty!).
Putting on a little green dress and some red lipstick really got me in the mood. Think Kim would mind if I moved into her place for a couple of months? I’m ready to serve up that yuletide! And it’s so cozy here I don’t wanna leave!
If you’re looking to start sprucing up your space for the holidays and you were inspired by my Target finds, you can find them all linked above. And yes, even those extremely cute rugs (and everything else in here) are from Target 😉
