FAQ
Querkraft Architekten Applies “Green Building” Design to New IKEA Outlets in Vienna
IKEA is a furniture and homewares company founded by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943 in Sweden. The success of IKEA is evidenced by the number of outlets spread around the world. IKEA has just announced the opening of its newest store located in Vienna, Austria, designed by Querkraft Architekten. Uniquely, the shape of the façade of this new outlet is different from the outlets in general, which display a façade resembling a blue and yellow container truck box. This 21,600-square meters building has a façade shape built of steel and concrete, therefore this building is designed to resemble the display shelves that are commonly displayed in IKEA sales catalogs.

In the initial process of designing this new outlet, the architect revealed that the building aims to be a good “neighbor”. So, to fulfill its mission, Querkraft Architekten designed this seven-story outlet by not providing car parking and planting 160 large trees on the roof and façade to provide coolness for the outlet while helping the climate in Vienna remain stable.

The interior of IKEA is designed by maintaining a visual relationship on each floor with a similar shape and design. The first four floors of this building accommodate IKEA products. In the market hall area, there is small-scale household furniture that can be taken directly such as pillows, dolls, toiletries, and kitchen tools. Entering another room, there is an area containing large-scale home furnishing products, ranging from chairs, tables, beds, and cabinets that will be assembled by themselves at home.
The appearance of escalators, that not only connect each floor but also add accents to the interior of the New IKEA Outlets in Vienna.
In addition, on different floors, there is a showroom area that displays the inspiration for the interior design of the house, like the living room, bedroom, children’s bedroom, and kitchen. Equipped with a cafe, the 345-bedroom hostel and rooftop are connected by an escalator that is accessible to the public from the ground floor to the rooftop.
