How to design a treehouse

Wooden Treehouse C | Stilt Studios

Following the previous success of prefabricated wooden house in Buduk, Wooden Treehouse C  is the next wooden building prototype created by Stilt Studios. This treehouse building is a part of a housing community called Bukit Sari, a quiet area with a high living standard. It is located in Penestanaan, a village outside the town of Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Penestanaan is a well-known artist village ever since 1930s. This exact location is surrounded by cozy restaurants and bars, yet at the same time is embedded into lush rice fields.

The architects sought to combine innovative prefab structure with a minimized footprint, maintaining a harmonious coexistence with nature. Just like the previous wooden projects, the structural principle of wooden treehouse C lies in the core element consisting of 4 vertical columns supported by stairs. The structure also supports the building’s ceiling and floor planes with sturdy steel cables running through the core elements. The structure allows the planes to create a streamlined facade with thin window frames and panels that are able to carry their own weight.

Unlike the previous treehouse project in Buduk, Treehouse C in Ubud is divided into several spaces such as a kitchen which is accompanied by a spacious living room, spacious bedroom and sitting area, instead of making it one open space with a surrounding terrace. This whole unit can accommodate 2 to 4 people in an area of 64 m2. The shape of the tree house owned by the building is supported by large windows on all sides of the building making the potential view of Mount Agung can be optimally enjoyed by users.

Wood Treehouse C’s outdoor garden is designed by True Nature Nusantara which uses permaculture design principles to create edible landscapes. The garden is full of flowers, tropical ornamental plants, edible fruits and spices, with a small pond in one corner. Bodhi Denton, the director, said the garden has a goal to create a dreamy and wild labyrinth consisting of low-maintenance and colorful perennial plants and trees. This then provides users with hidden away places to sit and enjoy the view of the adjacent rice fields.

Hitzig Militello Arquitectos Renovates Stately House Into Treehouse in Buenos Aires

An old house in the Palermo area of Buenos Aires has been renovated by Hitzig Militello Arquitecto. The function of the building has been transformed into a restaurant and bakery known as the “Moshu Tree House.” Hitzig Militello Arquitectos renovated the entire Moshu Tree House space which was previously a residential building.

See wider, Moshu Tree House is designed with an industrial style concept that gives rise to parts such as “buildings under construction” with materials typical of the industrial style, such as exposed concrete, wood, and construction iron. These typical industrial-style materials further strengthen the industrial concept at Moshu Tree House.

To beautify Moshu Tree House, Hitzig Militello Arquitectos designed a new façade in the courtyard of the house, adding a window frame that seemed to hide the exterior identity of the building that looked “obsolete.” On a different page, Hitzig Militello Arquitectos designed a façade with pieces of wood that featured the illusion of a floating-looking façade inspired by a typical American pastry shop, which used to “cool the cake by the window.”

Interestingly, from the other side, there is a space decorating element made of round cardboard. This element is a representation of a “cake or pie” applied in one of the areas of The Moshu Tree House. When visitors enter the house, they will be greeted by an arched entrance filled with round cardboard.

Looking higher, on the second-floor lawn, Moshu Tree House accommodates a cocktail bar adopted from a tree house. To mimic the authentic shape of the “tree house,” Hitzig Militello Arquitectos added the vegetation “Lagerstroemia Tree” as a symbol of the “tree house” planted in the central part of the yard. The atmosphere of the tree house was even more pronounced when some wood was applied around his yard which was complemented by vines on one of the walls.

Having a different style from other rooms, the cocktail bar on the second floor is designed with a classic concept with the use of a marble bar table, a classic style motif carpet, and a leather stool bar that completes the classic impression of the space.

Last but not least, the natural and artificial lighting at Moshu Tree House was well thought out by Hitzig Militello Arquitectos by applying a lot of ventilation and an open yard that further adds to the comfort of residents. As for light circulation, the team arranged the zoning of the room in an orderly manner to maximize the acquisition of light that can enter.
