3D-Prints Recycled Plastic in a Boutique Interior Design

Nowadays, plastic waste is increasing in number and is generated by various activities and sectors. In addition, the UN Environment Programme, in Perspectives Issue No.41, mentioned that around 141 million tons of plastic packaging are produced globally annually and produce a lot of waste. This plastic waste pollution can lead to biodiversity loss, exacerbate climate change and harm the environment. One of the impacts we are now feeling is the rise in global temperatures that will lead to extreme weather changes and melting glaciers in Antarctica. To deal with this, strategies and innovations are needed to reduce plastic waste pollution. For example, a store for a sustainable clothing brand in Spain, Ecoalf, was designed by design studio Nagami and is almost entirely 3D printed from recycled plastic.

By reusing 3.3 tons of plastic waste, Nagami created a transparent surface that resembled a melting glacier. The glacier panel will be applied to the entire 90-square-meter section of the store. These plastic panels are manufactured using robotic arms equipped with custom-made extruders that can print complex 3D shapes to bring together design and technology to raise awareness about the climate crisis. This advanced technology will create an interior space atmosphere that is unique and different from any clothing store. In addition, these glacier-like panels reflect the lamp’s light so that it looks like sparkling ice.

The display in this store is in the form of board displays on the walls, shelves, and display tables in the middle with a shape similar to ice chunks which can be used to display folded clothing products. One side of the wall is made with a motif like a broken glacier chunk that becomes a point of interest. While the ceiling is made in black to highlight plastic panels such as glaciers. Natural stone tile floors are patterned reminiscent of ice cracks to enhance the feeling of walking on a glacier. All components used for interior design can be disassembled and recycled for subsequent projects.

Not only is the store’s interior design sustainable, Ecoalf is a pioneer in eco-fashion products, but it also makes clothes, footwear, and accessories using recycled materials. Such materials include plastic bottles, old fishing nets, old tires, and post-industrial wool and cotton. Similarly, Nagami focuses on processing recycled plastics to create furniture, sculptures, interiors, and architectural elements as part of the production process. While clothing products are hung on displays attached to glacier walls, some accessories are placed on boards, and footwear is arranged in deeper spaces such as glacier caves.

The collaboration between Ecoalf and Nagami resulted in the concept of sustainable plastic waste treatment, in line with Sustainable Development Goal Number 12, namely Responsible Consumption and Production. The presence of this store is expected to be a reference and a campaign to reduce and recycle plastic waste for people around the world. In addition, the glacier panel design is also able to highlight the products sold.
